Real Random turns physical motion into cryptographic-grade entropy — the invisible foundation beneath encryption keys, digital signatures, and the security systems that protect the digital world. What Las Vegas rejected as too random, cybersecurity needed most.

Our Story

An invention Vegas rejected. A problem cybersecurity had to solve.

In 2002, an inventor named John A. Marta patented a slot machine that determined outcomes from actual physical dice instead of software — U.S. Patent 6,394,901. It produced something rare: results created by the physical world, not calculated by an algorithm. Casinos said no. His invention was too random. Their games depend on predictable mathematics, and John's dice couldn't be constrained to fit.

He passed away without ever selling it. What remained was a patent, a set of drawings, and an unfinished idea — inherited by his son-in-law, Doug Hill.

Doug spent years turning drawings into working machines. Prototypes came and went — a phone app, a robotic arm, a Lego-built tumbler, a server-chassis unit. Each version taught the team something. Each failure exposed another problem. The unofficial motto became: “If at first you fail, keep rolling.”

Then a physicist friend answered the question that changed everything.

“What else is this physical dice machine good for?”

“Encryption.”

Modern encryption depends on random numbers to create keys — but nearly every system generates them with software. These algorithms can produce enormous quantities of data, but they're deterministic. The cybersecurity industry had spent decades making encryption stronger while beneath it all rested a foundational assumption: that the randomness used to create keys could be trusted.

The invention Vegas rejected as too random had found the industry that needed it precisely because it was random.

That realization became Real Random.

What We Do

Real Random builds hardware that generates true entropy from physical dice tumbling in fluid, captured by high-speed cameras. That entropy powers encryption keys, digital signatures, authentication tokens, and secure communications for organizations that can't afford predictable randomness — in defense, financial services, healthcare, and critical infrastructure.

We deliver it two ways: as on-premises hardware appliances that integrate with existing key management systems, or as Entropy-as-a-Service through a REST API that applications can call directly. Nine U.S. patents, independent validation from Rochester Institute of Technology, and recognition as a Gartner Cool Vendor in Data Security 2025 back the technology.

We're not a replacement for the cryptography you already trust. We're the foundation beneath it — a vital component for encryption today and a foundation ready for post-quantum standards tomorrow.
